Why multiply by 8? Because 1 byte = 8 bits. File sizes are measured in bytes (KB, MB, GB), but internet speeds are measured in bits per second (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps). The ×8 bridges these two different unit systems.

Bytes vs Bits — Don’t Fall for This

This is the number one source of confusion with internet speeds. Almost everyone gets tricked by this at least once.

ISPs advertise speeds in bits (Mbps), but your computer shows file sizes in bytes (MB). These look almost identical — the only difference is a lowercase “b” vs uppercase “B” — but they’re 8x apart.

The reality: A “100 Mbps” connection downloads about 12.5 MB per second, not 100 MB. So when your ISP says “100 Mega,” your actual file download speed is only 12.5 — that’s an 8x gap that nobody tells you about upfront.
